Tree surgery is a science, and a process our company uses to cut trees in a way that’s beneficial to their health. The science behind tree surgery is to cut conscientiously. At K. Shepherd & Son, located in Godalming, we don't believe in hacking trees to the point where they can’t recover. Instead, our accredited tree surgeons calculate and measure out each cut with care, precision and attention to detail.
It is our methodical approach to tree surgery that has made our company such a popular choice with customers in the surrounding Cranleigh, Farnham, Guildford, Haslemere and Woking areas. We also cover the South of England.
From formative pruning and pollarding, to the safe removal of trees if there is no other option available to us, K. Shepherd & Son has a complete range of arboricultural services available. We’re a family-run business so tree surgery is very much in our blood. Ethical tree care is the hallmark of our company and a reassuring factor in our service delivery.
Our accredited tree surgeons can bring the following services to your home, land or business:
When pruning, we shorten side branches to make trees smaller and more attractive. This lets more light into the canopy, which has numerous benefits for surrounding plant life, and it also removes density to make trees less vulnerable to wind damage. Our core tree surgery practices for pruning include crown lifting, crown thinning, crown reduction and pollarding.
All of these processes give our tree surgeons an opportunity to remove damaged or diseased timber too.
Formative tree surgery creates a more balanced appearance across properties in Cranleigh, Farnham, Godalming, Guildford, Haslemere, Woking and the South. We work carefully and always assess the impact of removing limbs and branches first.
When most people think of tree surgery, they visualise the familiar TV image of a lumberjack chopping down trees in a dense forest. This image doesn’t really reflect what tree surgeons do on a day-to-day basis. Our work is always about preservation first, and we only remove trees if they are in a damaged, diseased or dangerous condition. We may also have to fell trees that stand in the way of land development.
Directional felling is the tree surgery process that most of our customers recognise. Our tree surgeons make strategic cuts to form a hinge in the trunk and this controls the directional fall. We use this method where the fall presents no immediate danger to property, to workforces or to members of the public.
Directional felling leaves a stump above ground level, which we can remove using stump grinding machinery.
If we can’t use directional felling, we remove trees using a form of tree surgery called sectional dismantling. This involves removing the branches individually, then cutting the main body of the tree in sections from the top downwards. Aerial and ground crews use winches and pulleys to lower cut timber to floor level in a safe and controlled manner.
After felling or dismantling, our tree surgery company removes timber from sites in the surrounding Cranleigh, Farnham, Guildford, Haslemere and Woking areas using loading shovels and grab hire machinery. Felled timber comes back to our yard in Godalming, where we season it and sell it on as firewood.
Directional felling and sectional dismantling leave part of the stump sitting above ground level. This looks unsightly, presents a tripping hazard for land users and can harbour bacteria and disease, including honeysuckle. Our tree surgeons can grind stumps to specified depths below soil level using specialist stump grinding machinery. This process chases out the main buttress roots to stop the stump from growing back.
In the world of tree surgery, nothing ever goes to waste. The stump grinding process creates a woodchip that we can remove, or which we can leave on site for you to use as mulch.
Stump grinding is a faster, more effective and less disruptive alternative to older root removal systems, such as digging or winching. It leaves just a small hole in the ground where the stump sits, which our tree surgeons can backfill with moved soil and with some of the woodchip derived from grinding.
K. Shepherd & Son can bring machinery to site clearances in Godalming and the surrounding Cranleigh, Farnham, Guildford, Haslemere and Woking areas to make operations more efficient. We use tractors, cranes, trailers, chippers, Unimog vehicles with grab arms, 360° excavators, winches, flails, woodchippers, shredders and mulchers. Everything we need for a fast-moving clearance comes supplied or hired by our company.
Tree surgery is often the first step towards a larger site clearance project, particularly for our commercial clients, or for those who manage forestry and woodland. We can supply tree surgeons and operatives to manage your clearance from outset to completion. K. Shepherd & Son handles all site clearance operations with personnel and public safety in mind.
